Costa Caribe 2.0 PortAventura’s ¤10 million waterpark transformation

Spain’s national synchronised swimming team was called upon last month to inaugurate the new €10 million waterpark facilities at PortAventura. The expansion adds 14,000 square-metres to the venue’s second gate, Costa Caribe

P

art of a €70 million three-year investment that aims to consolidate the Spanish theme park’s position as a European destination resort, the new look Costa Cairbe now totals 50,000 square metres and features attractions for all ages. Guests enjoying a break at the PortAventura resort can enjoy easy access to the waterpark from the four on- site hotels.

The signature feature of the waterpark expansion – kitted out by ProSlide – is the 31-metre- tall King Khajuna, the highest freefall slide in Europe. Adventurers who dare ride it face an exhilarating 55° descent at a speed of more than 6m per second. Next to this yellow monster is Ciclón Tropical (pictured left), a shorter slide for those who prefer an experience that is less extreme but still action-packed. Almost 20m high, it features an undulating descent of over 100 metres. More waterslide fun can be found in another section of the park on Rapid Race, a six-lane mat racer where both children and adults to compete to see who gets to the bottom the fastest. The journey down is filled with steep drops and thrilling cascades. For Costa Caribe’s smaller guests, a new children’s swimming pool has two depth levels: 50cm and 30cm. One of the central features of this space is the Galeón Pirata, a pirate ship filled with Sesame Street characters, where children will have a great time exploring its decks or zipping down its four pint-sized slides. By the side of the pool is Cayo Cookie, a play area with water jets for young adventurers to enjoy.

family. Designed for swimming, fun, but also relaxation, it features a waterfall that trickles down from the children’s swimming pool in addition to shallow water beds and invigorating water effects. PortAventura’s development team has created detailed but unobtrusive theming and landscaping for the new area of the waterpark. Large areas of greenery with more than 50 species of plants and palms create an Caribbean vibe. Completing the offer are the Focacceria restaurant, a new snack bar, solarium and relaxation areas to soak up some of that Spanish sun. PortAventura is located near Tarragona on the Costa Dorada, about an hour from Barcelona. Entry to Costa Caribe is €28/22 (adults/juniors). Packages are also available combining a short break at the PortAventura resort hotels.

The new Costa Caribe facilities are the latest new addition at PortAventura to open as part of the largest expansion in the Spanish park’s history. The

waterpark upgrade follows the opening last spring of Shambhala by B&M, Europe’s tallest rollercoaster, and the 2011 debut of SésamoAventura, a beautifully-themed kids’ area

(pictured) featuring everyone’s Sesame Street favourites. Both projects have become new signature features for PortAventura, cementing its reputation as a leading family-focused destination resort. With over 3.5 million guests a year, it is also one of the top 10 parks in Europe.
