Remodel or rebuild? KEC board ponders proposals concerning aging building

worsening structural problems, within the co-op's existing building. Jim Jackson, Kiamichi Electric CEO said the board is looking at preliminary designs and debating the pros and cons of remodeling the current space versus a building a new building.

The current building is not in compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) standards in several areas, he said. Water infiltration is increasing along walls and raising concerns over mold. "Safety is high priority for us and the lack of fire suppression is a major concern, along with mold growth," Jackson explained. "Furthermore, we have no room to grow. "

When the current building was completed in 1971, the co-op served 7,969 members.

Today, KEC employs 47 people and serves 21,445 accounts over 4,079 miles of line. More space is necessary to efficiently serve the growing membership.

"With our membership growing, as well as our plant, we need to plan so that we can assist our members and give them service they expect," Jackson said.

The KEC board created a building committee to study all options and report to the full board their findings. Preliminary figures show that building a new building may cost less per square foot than remodeling the current facility. "With today’s low interest market and the economy still stagnant, we see where this could be a benefit to KEC," Jackson said. "The board and management are working hard on this project and weighing all options carefully."

Automated answering system in place

If you've called Kiamichi Electric Cooperative (KEC) recently, you've noticed the co-op's new automated answering system. The automated system allows KEC to answer incoming calls more efficiently, while reducing wait times and busy signals for members.

The automated answering system is particularly useful during outages and other periods when the co-op is experiencing high call volume. It's also significantly

less expensive than hiring more phone attendants or installing additional lines.

When you call the co-op, the answering system will direct your call to the right department after asking you to select from several options. Or you can enter the name of the person you are calling and your call will be transferred to that person.

KEC hopes the new system will connect you to the right person more efficiently.
