big notebook at the front of the café. The pages are fi lled with signatures and little notes of praise from people both far and away.

“This is the fun part of the job—talking to people from all over the world,” Dennis says. “It makes you feel good to know peo- ple went out of their way to come and enjoy your food.”

Verdigris Valley Electric Cooperative members and Owasso residents Mike and Edna Meyer aren’t from another country, but they do enjoy making special trips to Vinita just for lunch at Clanton’s Café. “We try to come every six weeks,” Edna says. “The chicken fried steak is extra crispy, we love the fresh vegetables and the pie is to die for.”

Clanton’s may not be the only mom-and- pop café located along the Mother Road, but the family fl air and smart professional- ism of its operation certainly set it apart. Dennis and Melissa have devoted their lives to the quality of food and service at their café, and it shows.

“We never really leave, but that’s why the restaurant has done so well,” Melissa says.

“We’re only as good as the last chicken fried steak we cook.”

Open seven days a week, Clanton’s Café is a welcome favorite among locals but also an exciting experience for unfamiliar travel- ers. One daily regular described it best as “kind of like Cheers—where everybody knows your name.”

Whether for the food or the friendly fac- es, Clanton’s is a treasured jewel of north- east Oklahoma, and the owners are “always glad you came.”
