The uplifting life of Oklahoma native Thomas P. Stafford

Dream High Continued from Page 22

This time when Smiley called, he said, “Apollo 10, this is Recovery. The NASA surgeon would like to know how you feel.”

Stafford’s reply, “Why don’t you tell that NASA surgeon to take a couple of aspirins and call me in the morning?”

A Final Word The Stafford Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts. It’s a re- minder of America’s greatness when united in a common effort. According to Director Max Ary, “NASA was the primary incubator of new technology in its day. More than 80,000 things we have in our lives are the result of the space program.”

Hopefully, the museum will inspire in today’s youngsters a fascination for sci- ence and engineering.

Stafford himself has a word of advice, “Dream big and never give up on those dreams. I grew up in a small western- Oklahoma town, but ended up fl ying to the moon. You can’t get much bigger dreams than that.”
