Cognex has upgraded its line of DataMan 8000 series industrial handheld barcode readers with a major performance boost to both reading robustness and speed. The handheld readers are now equipped with proprietary Cognex Hotbars image analysis technology for fast 1-D barcode reading performance and Cognex 2DMax+ algorithm for decoding of 2-D printed and DPM matrix codes Right: the DataMan

he new features of the barcode readers also include a rapid dual focus image acquisition routine which enables the read- ers to decode a wide range of barcode sizes even faster. The DataMan 8000 series is designed for the factory floor and offers the most advanced code reading technology.

Advanced barcode readers “The DataMan 8000 series was a true breakthrough for industrial handheld readers when it was released in 2010,” said Carl Gerst, business unit manager for ID Products. “However, at Cognex, we strive for excellence and are always looking for ways to break new ground in technology. With the addition of Hotbars, 2DMax+ and faster focusing capability, the DataMan 8000 series is the most powerful and reliable indus- trial handheld reader available.” 1DMax+ with Hotbars enables the DataMan 8000 series to read the most challenging 1-D barcodes quickly and easily even when those barcodes are damaged, blurred, at extreme perspec- tive or otherwise challenging. The DataMan 8000 series now utilises the powerful 2DMax+ algo- rithm, which has the fastest decode times and is effective even on codes with perspective distortion, low con- trast or finder and clocking pattern damage. The DataMan 8000 series allows the user to select the type of code to be read (from easy to extremely challenging). This is espe- cially useful for increasing reading speeds when only printed or high con- trast codes are being read or when facing the most challenging DPM

codes that cannot be read with stan- dard settings.

The DataMan 8000 series is now equipped with patented auto-expo- sure algorithms and faster image acquisition and liquid lens perfor- mance. The faster imaging means readers can now be used in a dual focus mode, which allows users to increase the depth of field or to read a wide range of barcode sizes, from very large multi-inch barcodes to tiny 5ml 2-D Data Matrix codes.

The DataMan 8000 series is avail- able in two base models: The DataMan 8500 readers incorpo- rate patented UltraLight technology from Cognex for superior image forma- tion on any code type and surface. UltraLight illumination provides dark field, bright field and diffuse lighting all in one electronically controlled light. The DataMan 8100 includes all of the features of the DataMan 8500 read- ers as well as bright field illumination. The DataMan 8100 readers are ideal for applications that require superior code reading performance without speciality lighting.

level product traceability. Customers can use In-Sight Track &

Trace 2.0 with multiple networked In-Sight vision systems to decode human readable text along with 2-D and 1-D barcodes, including Data Matrix, GS1-128, GS1 DataBar, securPharm and Pharmacode. “In-Sight Track & Trace is an off the shelf label verification and serialisa- tion software supplement for our phar- maceutical customers required to comply with GS1 and FDA regulations and similar laws worldwide,” said Herbert Lade, vice president and busi- ness unit manager, Vision Systems. He added, “In the newest version, we incorporated bundling reading sup- port, secondary authentication capa- bility and our OCRMax tool for the highest read rates in the industry. This new feature provides superior read rates of human readable dates, lot codes and serial numbers.”

The pre-programmed add-on soft- ware package needs little set-up through a touchscreen or HMI. In-Sight Track & Trace can be easily integrated into third party serialisation software or MES with industrial protocol support and built-in I/O controls. The technical controls needed for FDA 21 CFR Part 11 valida- tion, including secure user authentica- tion and automatic audit trail generation, are also included.
