night and on Sunday’s trip. The Friday night session got started a half hour late due to rain, while Saturday’s was cut short by 20 minutes for the same reason.

I headed home with a suitcase full of wet

clothes on Monday, but the memories from the weekend were great. Thanks to the rail- fan weekend staff and the folks from the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Histor- ical Association. It was a great event! — S.B.

Common Courtesy

Our hobby is social by nature. We love to share our photos, our stories, and the cama- raderie of trains and railroading. That’s why we get together with our buddies to look at slide shows, chase trains out on the main lines, and sometimes even tinker with mod- els in the basement. On a larger scale, some of us join historical societies, volunteer at museums, participate in photo charters, or attend conventions. No matter how you en- joy trains, it’s the friends you make along the way that make this hobby so enjoyable. As you can imagine, I’m a member of a number of organizations and I try to divide my time equally amongst them all, making contributions where I can. I see it as a way of giving back. So much of our activity is based on people freely volunteering their knowl- edge and experiences, so it only makes sense to jump in and get involved where ever you can. A couple months ago I was looking for-

ward to making a presentation at a regional convention about a subject I had a particu- lar personal interest in. I couldn’t attend the entire convention, but at least I could make a presentation and see some old friends. Needless to say, things didn’t go very well.

Despite weeks of preparation and planning, the schedule of evening presenters was thrown into chaos, and I did not present. The details are not important, but I felt a little stung after rearranging work schedules, picking up magazines, and driving many long hours, all at my own expense. I remember the first time I was asked to present at a local NRHS chapter. I was excit- ed and flattered they asked, and spent weeks preparing my show. I arranged for time off to make the drive and beat rush hour traffic to be there in time for their 7:00 start. When I arrived, I was greeted by a large auditorium filled with about eight of their most loyal members. Three left follow- ing the business meeting, and one left half- way through my show (two others fell asleep once the lights went down). Despite the low turnout, it was still a good experience for me. I’m sure there are many stories just like

mine. In fact, I’ve heard about some experi- ences that were far worse. Fortunately, these instances are few, but after a few bad expe- riences you start to become hesitant about volunteering for shows. It takes a lot of work to pull off a successful event where everyone is happy. There’s a few common courtesies to be followed when you’re hosting any kind of event, whether it is a single presentation or a weekend conference. Just because your meeting is small doesn’t mean it is any less important. Likewise, if you are hosting a larger event with many presenters, you’ll want to make sure you get some extra help to cover all the details. It’s very easy to let things slip through the cracks if you’re working alone!
