KCS Up For Grabs? There is much hushed-tone discussion on Wall Street these days spotlighting Kansas City Southern (KCS) as a hot prospect for ag- gressive investors. The discussion was fueled as the S&P 500 moved to replace Dean Foods Co. on its coveted list. The S&P 500 stock market index is based on the market capital- ization of 500 leading publicly traded compa- nies. KCS President Michael Upchurch proudly proclaimed the S&P 500 move “is an- other milestone for the company.” Analysts Brooke Sutherland and Frederick Tomesco declared that “No North American railroad is a more alluring, or expensive takeover tar- get than KCS.” Hodges Capital Manage- ment, Inc. speculates that Union Pacific may be the ultimate acquirer of the line. In recent years, KCS has drawn much at- tention for its steady expansion, for example service across the border into Mexico, in- cluding new international business at Laza- ro Cardenas, that nation’s largest port.

New DOT Boss President Obama has nominated Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Anthony Foxx as his new Secre- tary of Transportation. At a Senate confir- mation hearing May 22, Mayor Foxx man- aged to avoid controversy during the six-hour session. Mr. Foxx is seen as a “rising star” in the Democratic Party. Some locals in Charlotte, however, believe he has occupied an office which is largely ceremonial, with the bulk of power in the hands of a city manager and

the city council. The Charlotte Observer has editorially termed Foxx “a transportation nominee without a hefty transportation re- sume.” His signature goal has been a light rail project in Charlotte. That line has not met its pre-build ridership projections, a not-unusual circumstance where supporters almost routinely exude optimism for their public works proposals. But partly as a re- sult of that, he has so far been unable to con- vince the council to expand the light rail net- work beyond its one line.

Thumbs Up On Coal

Despite the no-holds barred Washington battle against coal, to say nothing of the sup- posedly cheaper inroads by natural gas, “Old King Coal” is still out front as America’s en- ergy provider. And the railroads, most espe- cially UP (at a record level) and BNSF, are reaping gratifying shipping benefits. In fact, the seven largest railroads in the week end- ing April 22 hauled 22 per cent more car- loads of coal than in the same week of 2012, according to data from the AAR. If you hold stock in the affected railroads (in addition to UP and BNSF), you too de- rived the benefits. We’re talking here of CSX, Norfolk Southern, Genesee & Wyo- ming, and Kansas City Southern advanced about 21 per cent this year. The increase is substantial enough even to the extent that some rail customers are switching from nat- ural gas (which is now less “cheap” than it was just recently) and back to coal. BNSF hauled about 33 per cent of all the coal traf- fic in the U.S. and Canada in 2012. Wes Vernon is a Washington-based writer and veteran broadcast journalist.
