LYNCHBURG RAIL DAY
2013
August 11, 2013 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

BOONSBORO RURITAN CLUB, 1065 COFFEE ROAD LYNCHBURG, VA 24503
Moore-Keppel No. 3 powered a passenger trainon May 16 on the former Chesapeake & Ohio line along the Greenbrier River
Scenic No. 4 was relettered for the Cass, Greenbrier
ally away from the park, as we headed up to Cheat Bridge for a ride on the West Virginia Central. A freight powered by a GP9 in a Baltimore & Ohio-inspired livery and a pas- senger train powered by a pair of Western Maryland-painted F units made several pho- to stops. The beautiful weather of the previ- ous day had vanished, however, and most of the runbys were made in a moderate rain — and some were made in a heavy downpour. Following the ride on the West Virginia Central we headed over to the nearby Durbin & Greenbrier Valley for a ride be- hind Moore-Keppel No. 3, a spiffy little Cli- max. This ride tied into the history of the Cass railfan weekends as it headed along the Greenbrier River below Durbin; this line was used in the mid-1980s as part of the Cass weekends when Western Maryland Shay “Big 6” and a BL2 diesel would power trains to Durbin. The line was washed out in 1987 and remains disconnected between Cass and Durbin. Speaking of washed out,
powered a work train at the bridge over Leatherbark Creek near Cass on May 19 (below).
the night photo session was canceled when the radar showed we wouldn’t get an hour of non-precipitation to set up the lights. The following three days we were at the Cass Scenic Railroad, with a trip to Spruce on Friday. Saturday was the big trip to the top of Bald Knob (which for some unex- plained reason has been demoted from the second-highest point in West Virginia to third highest), with fog socking in the view at the top. The Sunday short trip went to Whittaker. One of the highlights of the Fri- day and Saturday trips was a new photo lo- cation cleared out by the railfan weekend crew overlooking the valley from Old Spruce. Saturday was particularly impres- sive with fog layered in between the moun- tains. Cass Shays 5 and 11 and Western Maryland 6 handled the first two days’ trains. Shay No. 4, lettered for the Cass, Greenbrier, Cheat & Bald Knob Scenic Rail- road (the one-season precursor to the Cass Scenic Railroad) got into the act on Saturday
