BAKKEN OIL CAPACITY IS EXPANDED: Dakota Plains Holdings and Petroleum Trans- port Solutions are building the Pioneer Project on Canadian Pacific’s New Town Branch in New Town, N.D., to handle increased volumes of crude oil from the Bakken Formation. The new facility will have a double-track loop which will allow 120-car trains to be loaded with up to 80,000 barrels of crude a day, com- pared with 30,000 barrels currently. The proj- ect is expected to be finished in December.
HARRISON IS IN ACQUISITION MODE: Even as the railroad seeks to divest itself of the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern’s west end, Canadian Pacific CEO E. Hunter Harrison said in May that CPR will play a part in the in- dustry’s consolidation as it evaluates potential short line and regional railroad takeover tar- gets. He downplayed the possibility of taking over another Class I, such as Kansas City Southern, and did not identify any specific possibilities for potential acquisition.
East Broad Top
DERELICT HOPPERS FOR SALE: The iconic fleet of nearly 100 East Broad Top nar- row gauge coal hoppers that have sat in the yard at Mount Union, Penn., for over 50 years has been put up for sale. While most of the sheet metal has rusted through and trees are growing in and around many cars, the trucks and brake equipment are thought to be sal- vageable. Like ghosts suspended in a time warp, the yard full of old hopper cars has con- tributed to the EBT mystique.
Fillmore & Western
ANOTHER SHORT LINE UNDER FIRE: The Ventura County Transportation Commis- sion has announced that on December 1 it will terminate Fillmore & Western’s lease on the county-owned, former Southern Pacific Santa Paula Branch. The county wants the branch to be at least “cost neutral” if not profitable.
Introducing Northern Central No. 17, York
THE WORLD’S NEWEST 4-4-0, Northern Central Railroad No. 17 York, was delivered to Civil War excursion operator Steam Into History at New Freedom, Penn., on May 21, 2013. Built by Kloke Locomotive in Elgin, Ill., the oil-fired American was to make its inaugural trip between New Freedom and Hanover Junction on June 2. The locomotive will pull three trips a day be- tween Hanover Junction and New Freedom, daily except Mondays from June 25 through Sep- tember 2, Friday-Sunday before and after those dates. Until turning facilities can be built, Stew- artstown Railroad GE 44-tonner No. 10 will pull the train on the outbound leg of each trip. We showed No. 17’s initial shakedown run at the Fox Valley Railroad Museum in last month’s RAIL- NEWS and told the Steam Into History story in the February 2013 issue.
Four options are on the table: maintain the status quo; make Fillmore & Western a com- mon carrier and pursue freight business; re- tain Union Pacific as freight carrier and main- tain only the part of the railroad used for freight service; or discontinue rail operations and retain the right of way for trail use.
Lake Shore Railway Historical Society
NS DONATES A DASH 8: Norfolk Southern has donated General Electric Dash 8-32B No. 3563 to the Lake Shore Railway Historical Soci- ety of North East, Penn., built in 1989 at the GE Transportation locomotive assembly plant in nearby Erie. It is thought to be the first Dash-8 to be preserved. Just 49 units were built, 45 of which were purchased by Norfolk Southern. The locomotive is expected to be de- livered to the museum in June. Other GE diesels at LSRHS include New York Central U25B No. 2500; Wellsville, Addison & Galeton 135-tonner No. 1700 (ex-Ford Motor Co.); and several small switchers and industrial units.
MBTA BR&W No. 60 Goes Back to the Future
GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY LETTERING adorned Black River & Western 2-8-0 No. 60 for a few days in May as the locomotive was returned to its original livery for a Pete Lerro photo char- ter on May 17. The train is shown approaching Ringoes, N.J., toward the end of the day (above).
NEW BILEVELS ARE IN SERVICE: By early June, the first 16 of the T’s order of 75 Hyundai-Rotem bilevel commuter coaches were on the property, and seven were in serv- ice. Their first revenue run was on April 24 from Boston to Haverhill, N.H. The contro- versial conveyances were ordered in 2008 and delivery was to have been completed by the end of 2012. Continual delays and start- up problems at the builder’s assembly plant in South Philadelphia, Penn., nearly resulted in the order’s cancellation. There will be 47 trailers numbered 800-846 and 28 cabs cars numbered 1800-1827. Now, the order is slat- ed to be completed by next summer.
