slowly restored company houses for use by tourists, as well as some for admin- istration of the park.
Unfortunately, some pieces of the town have vanished over the years, with fire being the biggest enemy. The stately school simply was taken over by nature, with the two wings demolished in 2008 and 2009. The wooden planing mill was destroyed by fire in 1978, while the sawmill was taken by fire in 1982. The original C&O depot burned in 1975 and was replaced in 1978. The railroad shop also burned, replaced by the current state-of-the-art structure.
Shays Galore
Cass Scenic Railroad boasts one of the largest collections of operating geared locomotives in the country. The current roster includes: Shay No. 2: Built in 1928, Pacific
Coast Shay 2 originally was an oil burner and worked for the Mayo Lum- ber
Co. in British Columbia and
worked for various owners in that province until 1970. It came to Cass in 1970 and first operated in West Vir- ginia in 1972. It was converted to burn coal in 1983 and is currently undergo-
