New ACS-64 Electric is Unveiled by Amtrak and Siemens Transportation
AMTRAK’S NEW CORRIDOR SPRINTER is the latest word in electric traction on this side of the pond. Three of the sleek new motors (Nos. 600-602) were introduced to the industry on May 13, 2013, at a special ceremony at the Siemens Mobility plant in Sacramento, Calif. While No. 601, the first completed unit of the new 600 class, took its “first steps” on April 15 on the plant’s short test track, it and No. 600 have been sent to the Transportation Test Center test track near
Pueblo, Colo., where they will be put through their paces, while No. 602 will be shipped east to Wilmington, Del., for testing on the North- east Corridor.
As were Amtrak’s very successful AEM7 and its ALP44 derivative, the ACS-64 is based on a European design, the Siemens Vectron, but with structural upgrades to satisfy Federal Railroad Administration re- quirements. The large American flag and Siemens lettering were ap- plied for the rollout ceremony; the standard paint scheme will have a large Amtrak logo in place of the flag. The locomotives are rated at a peak of 8600 h.p. and will be able to pull 18 Amfleet cars at up to 125 m.p.h. They have dual HEP inverters to provide backup power for HVAC and lights if one inverter fails.
