Summer buds bring winter blooms

Hawaii, contests and more coming down the pipe By Terry Kolesar, Editor, terry.kolesar@usacurl.org

daydream that we all take long vacations and soak in Wisconsin’s brief summer rays, the summer months have become a frantic period of prepara- tion and catch-up over the years. Plus, the curling season is now year-round in the U.S., which is even more evident this year with the introduction of the Arena National Championships, which will take place July 18-21 in Fort Wayne, Ind. Summer is never an idle period, rather one of transition and moving forward.

O Website migration In the beginning of June, visitors to www.usacurl.org will see a brand

new look for the USA Curling website. USA Curling has signed a digital me- dia agreement with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), which provides a web platform to us similar to www.teamusa.org. While the new platform will go online around June 1, the content for the entire website will be transitioned throughout the summer, with an Aug. 1 target date for completion. Bear with us during this process. We hope you’ll enjoy the new look, which hopefully will be more user friendly. Contests

In the next few months USA Curling will be rolling out several great

contests for you to take part in. Te first is a fundraising program called the Honorary Team Captain to give away a dream trip to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Russia. Te trip, which will be similiar to the one won by Loreen Makishma-Wolf in 2010 for the Vancouver Games, will in- clude airfare to/from Russia, hotel accommodations, tickets to the Olympic curling competition, and other VIP perks. Te other contest will revolve around the upcoming 2014 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for curling in Fargo

ne of the No. 1 questions people ask me besides why is the na- tional office in Stevens Point, is, What do you guys do in the summer? (i.e., this can’t be a full-time job). While I’d like to

this fall. If you haven’t bought tickets yet, go online to www.2014usacurlingtrials. com. Speaking of tickets, sales for the 2014 World Financial Group Continental Cup in Las Vegas are going strong. At press time, more than 1,700 all event passes had been purchased. (Visit http://www. curling.ca/2014continentalcup to secure your tickets today!) Aloha!

Yes, the rumors are true! USA Curling is taking part in a celebrity char-

ity fund-raiser in Hawaii this fall. Te event is being backed by American Savings Bank with profits going to the Kapiolani Hospital for Women and Children in Honolulu and USA Curling. Te curling fundraiser will take place Oct. 17 at Te Ice Palace in Honolulu. Four sets of rocks have been purchased and will stay in Hawaii to help in the formation of a curling club. Where in the world? Tweet! Tweet!

One of my trips this season took me to Sochi, Russia, for the 2013 World

Junior Championships, which served as the official test event for the up- coming Olympic Winter Games. (See Getty Images photos below of the interior and exterior of the Ice Cube Curling Center.) I’ve heard that ticket sales are very strong and will likely be sold out soon for the curling com- petition. Te venue seats around 3,000 and will also be used for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. According to the host comittee’s website, the “Ice Cube Curling Center is a moveable venue, making it possible to be dis- mantled and transported for post-Games use as a curling center in another Russian city.” I look forward to seeing the Coastal Cluster in February when it is fully completed. My travels as editor for this publication this season took me from a blizzard in Bismarck to sunshine in Victoria, British Co- lumbia, and many stops in between. When my big brother would track me down on the phone he’d simply say “Where are you now, kid?” For those following me on Twitter, you know I need a tweet intervention. Enjoy your summer; we'll be busy helping to grow the great sport we all love. n
