But the team fought hard all week and fi nished the 2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice, on a winning note as Brady Clark's rink defeated Norway, 9-7, to fi nish with a 5-6 record. “It was a huge win. We needed to win that

game and fi nish with a win and get a little bit of confi dence,” Clark said. “T is week didn’t quite go our way. We defi nitely had a learning experi- ence and look forward to a lot of things we can work on moving forward.” However, the win would not prove to be

enough to qualify the U.S. men for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, in Feb- ruary. T e U.S. will try to earn one of the fi nal two available berths to the Olympic Games this December at the World Curling Federation's Olympic Qualifi cation Event (OQE) Dec. 11-15 in Fussen, Germany. Beighton (Seattle), Philip Tilker (Seattle), Darren Lehto (Seattle), and Greg Persinger (Anchorage, Alaska) fi nished ranked ninth in the team's fi rst appearance at the world championship. “We feel good as a team but were just on the

wrong inch of a lot of diff erent games. One game, one shot could have changed it. We’re disap- pointed that we didn’t take control of our own destiny but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” Clark said. T e team was coached by Ken Trask (Seattle) and Scott Baird (Bemidji, Minn.). Clark fi nished the round robin as the sceond

ranked skip in shooting percentage. Clark's team is one of fi ve that are qualifi ed for the upcom- ing 2014 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Curling, which will take place Nov. 10-17 in Fargo, N.D. T e winner of the Trials will compete in the OQE in Germany to earn USA's men's spot for the 2014 Olympic Games. Sweden's Niklas Edin rink went on to win the

gold medal with an 8-6 victory over Canada. It was the fi rst world men's title for Sweden since 2004. Edin also was the recipient of the Colin Campbell Memorial Award for sportsmanship, which was voted on by his peers. ■
