Indoor Season Recap

that witnessed a heavy assault on the

record books, which also included American records set in the men’s 600m, two-mile and 3,000m, the women’s 600m

and Mary Cain’s continued dominance of the high school record books.

SOWINSKI, MONTANO DOMINATE 600M AT MILLROSE GAMES

When the time came for the men’s 600m at the 106th edition of the Millrose Games in February, few

paid much attention to Eric Sowinski. And few would blame them as the race included 2012 800m Olympic finalists Duane Solomon and Nick Symmonds with Solomon being weeks removed from setting the American record in the 600m.

However, Sowinski made the first statement win of his young

career in establishing the American 600m record in 1:15.61. Sowinski then parlayed the win into his first national championship in winning the USA Indoor 800m title in Albuquerque.

On the women’s side, Alysia Montano flirted with the all-time world best in the 600m while she crushed the American record in 1:23.59. She shattered Delisa Walton’s previous American best of 1:26.56, which had stood since 1981.

LAGAT, RUPP CONTINUE TO SHINE

In recent memory, few athletes have traded American records more than Bernard Lagat and Galen Rupp. The duo continued to shine during the 2013 indoor season as each took records away from the other.

First, it was Lagat that took back his American indoor record in the two-mile in February at the Millrose Games. Rupp set the record in the 2012 before Lagat grabbed back the American best indoor mark in 2013 at 8:09.49.

Days later, competing at the IAAF XL Galan Indoor Meeting in Stockholm, Rupp took back the American indoor record from Lagat in the 3,000m with his winning time of 7:30.18.

Two of the more accomplished runners in American distance running history, Rupp and Lagat have combined to hold a total of eight American indoor and outdoor records.

HIGH SCHOOL SENSATION MARY CAIN CAPS TREMENDOUS INDOOR SEASON

Culminating with her USA Indoor title in the women’s mile at the age of 16, Mary Cain’s name quickly became synonymous with record setting performances during the 2013 indoor season.

A quick summary – in three races during the indoor season, Cain set a total of six records.

For Cain, who attends Bronxville (N.Y.) High School and is coached by Alberto Salazar, the indoor season has brought the total number of high school indoor and outdoor and American and world junior records to ten.
