CROSS GENERATIONS

AT CALIFORNIA ALL-COMERS MEET BY JARED SLINDE

On a Saturday in early February at Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego, track and field generations that would otherwise seem worlds apart were joined on a single high jump surface. It was more than 50 years surrounding the sport that was brought together for one hour at the San Diego-Imperial USATF Winter Classic all-comers meet.

Sean Lee stared across the high jump surface and saw the product of his dreams. At 13 years old, those dreams, which he speaks of so keenly and frequently, drive him each day. The face of the satisfaction in reaching those goals was staring right back.

That drive and dedication was evident to Willie Banks as looked in Lee’s direction. Now 57 years old, having been to the pinnacle of track and field, Banks knows the road to achieve those dreams. And the desire to do so became evident in Lee that afternoon.

Banks is no stranger to being the best in

the world. A two-time Olympian, he is a former world record holder in the triple jump and a member of the National Track & Field

Hall of Fame. Still active as a masters athlete, he has continued to build age-group records.
