ROGERS ROLLS WHILE RECORDS FALL

AT MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS BY JARED SLINDE

The Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md., played host to the 2013 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in March and those in attendance witnessed history.

A total of 11 world records and an additional 12 American records fell during the three days of competition, which were highlighted by the improbable six-world-record performance by Orville Rogers (M95). A record 1,044 entrants ages 30-95+ from 14 countries and 47 states were on hand for the championships, which included 10 Olympians and 30 world champions. The Potomac Valley Track Club won the overall team title among 70 clubs from around the country.

Rogers put together a performance difficult to duplicate in Landover as he set world records in each one of the events that he entered. Competing in two events each day, by the time the meet ended Rogers had established world age-group records in the 60m (14.82), 200m (57.88), 400m (2:24.51), 800m (6:53.84), mile (14:39.91) and 3,000m (30:19.33).

While Rogers stole many of the headlines, there were additional performances from the weekend that left an impression with those in attendance.

First there was Bruce McBarnette (M55) predicting his world record jump in the men’s high jump before following through in clearing a world-record height of 1.88m/6-2.

There was three-time Olympian and 1984 Olympic flagbearer Ed Burke (M73), who opened competition with wins in both the weight throw and superweight throw. It was a great moment in a career that has spanned six decades.

In what Masters Track & Field Meet Coordinator Carroll DeWeese called “the fastest old race ever,” two world records and one American record were set in a single race in the M85, M90 and M95 age groups in the 3,000m with Hugh Campbell (WR), Roy Englert (AR) and Rogers (WR), respectively.

And certainly not least, there was Oscar Peyton (M60), who brought the crowd to its feet with a dominant win in the 60m in a world record time of 7.52.
