 British Cleaning Council Helping to defuse the ‘ticking time bomb’

ferred to the situation as a ‘ticking time bomb’ that couldmean that routine op- erationsmay lead to fatal in- fections, and everyday cuts and stomach upsets could come with amuch graver threat than a bandage or day out of the office. Though focussing research

By Doug Cooke, chairman, British Cleaning Council.

The warning fromthe Chief Medical Officer thismonth is a timely prompt for the cleaning industry to remind the world of it’s worth. The ChiefMedical Officer

has recommended that the increased resistance to an- tibiotics be added to the Na- tional Risk Register, to sit alongside terrorist attacks as a catastrophic threat. Dame Sally Davies has re-

into the discovery of new an- tibiotics is vital, the report also recommended that bet- ter hygienemeasures should be put in place in hospitals when treating the new strand of infections. It’smy opinion that the cleaning in- dustry needs to go a step further andmake the case for increased investment in cleaning public buildings, of- fices, schools, and public transport, and also in new technologies and awareness raising. BCC supporter, TheWorld

Federation for Building Serv- ice Contractors, will be pub- lishing its revised report into ‘Cleaning for Health’ this April. ‘Cleaning for Health’

amasses the latest peer-re- viewed science globally re- garding themost effective ways to curtail the spread of infections. This report will forma key part of the BCC’s policy framework for 2013 and 2014, promoting the cru- cial role of the cleaning in- dustry in public health. During the H1N1 (swine

flu) epidemic of 2009 the ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ adver- tisements contributed signif- icantly to the prevention of a full pandemic. A report into the impact of flu communi- cations cuts by the previous ChiefMedical Officer, Pro- fessor LiamDonaldson, sug- gests that a ‘laissez faire’ attitude to awareness raising may lead tomore flu-related deaths. CSSAmember Kim- berly-Clark’s ‘Healthy Schools Project’, a partner- ship with Disney that en- courages good hand hygiene in schools using popular cartoon characters, is just one example of our industry taking the initiative in acting

to ensure that people realise the importance of cleanli- ness (see panel). The British Cleaning Coun-

cil offers grants to itsmem- ber organisations to get projects and initiatives off the ground. I would like to take this opportunity to en-

courage applications relating to public health whilst the topic is verymuch in the public consciousness. To find outmore about the grants, please take a look at the BCC’s revamped website - http:// britishcleaningcouncil.org.

TheHealthy Schools Project

Kimberly-Clark Professional has highlighted its collabora- tion with Disney by introducing a new education wellness programme called The Healthy Schools Project. The pro- gramme focuses on engaging pupils, teachers and staff to reduce the spread of germs and create a healthy and pro- ductive learning environment. Kimberly-Clark Professional has created a range of learn-

ingmaterials called ‘Hand wash heroes withMickeyMouse and friends’ that can be used to encourage children aged be- tween 3 and 7 to wash their hands, helping to prevent the spread of common illnesses such as colds, flu and stomach upsets. Pre-schools and schools taking part in the programme will

be supplied with an education toolkit that contains a range of Disney-branded learningmaterials. It includes lesson plans that enable teachers to integrate lessons about hand hygiene seamlessly into the school day, making several links to the curriculumincluding PSHE and science subjects. www.kcprofessional.co.uk
