Supporting sustainable performance Peter Robb,Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, outlines the support it provides for environmental action within small andmedium-sized enterprises.
The Sustainable City Awards, which took place on 19March, were established by the City of London Corporation in 2000. Over the years the awards have become the UK’s foremost green business awards scheme, more recently acquiring the colloquial title of the ‘Green Oscars’. TheWorshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners became involved in the awards from
their inception as part of itsmission to encourage andmaintain high standards of practice and integrity. The company is the livery sponsor of the ‘environmentalmanagement in small businesses’ category. This award category recognises and rewards innovative practices lead- ing to significant improvements in environmental performance in SMEs across the UK. WCEC is one of 23 organisations that partner the awards, which are given across 12 cate-
gories that, between them, represent the three pillars of sustainable development - the econ- omy, society and the environment. Entries to each of the categories are judged by independent judging panels established by
the organisations which support a particular category. Each of the judging panels is responsi- ble for selecting a winner, runner up and three shortlisted entries for their category. The win- ner and runner up of each category is passed on to the final judging panel, which is composed of a number of experts under the non-voting chairmanship of the City of London’s head of sustainable development. This panel is responsible for choosing the winners of the Liveable City Trophy, and the London Chamber of Commerce Leadership Award. Last year the Sustainable City Awards attracted over 230 applications fromorganisations
ranging froma family owned fish and chip shop to a national supermarket. The annual awards ceremony takes place atMansion House, the home of the LordMayor,
who attends if his schedule allows it. This year he was represented by Alderman FionaWoolf CBE. A leading sustainability figure presents the awards on behalf of the City of London Cor- poration. This year’s awards were presented by ethical consumer champion, Livia Firth (wife of globally renowned actor and producer, Colin Firth). Information about the 2012-13 award winners can be found at

Formed fromthe amalgama- tion of Connect Hygiene Products Ltd and Peter Grant Papers Ltd, Northwood Hy- giene Products Ltd will be operating under its new name fromJuly this year. Headed by ChrisWickham
and hismanagement team, the combined turnover of nearly £50million will see it as the clear number three in the UK ‘away fromhome’ disposable papermarket, with a 15%volume share. Like themajors, the new company will benefit from being both a converter and a manufacturer. It will con- tinue to be a UK based, fam- ily owned and run business, able to respond quickly and positively to localmarket re- quirements. The existing synergy be-
tween the two companies meant that there was little overlap in themarket sec- tors they serve, with the branded Leonardo and Es- sentials ranges comple- menting the valued private label and established wiping businesses, the latter in- cluding the well-known

Bosswipes and Perform names. Personnel changes are not
expected and customers will see little, if any, changes in their current supply relation- ships. The two companies’ traditions of having a paper business run by paper indus- try professionals will be em- bedded into the DNA of the new company, giving both stability and a foundation for exciting future developments. New sectors and new oppor- tunities will be evaluated, all aimed at providing even greater flexibility and choice. Such is the future poten-
tial, it is expected that a re- cruitment programme will be core to achieving the company’s growth targets. With the four other associ-
ated limited companies - Northwood Paper Sales, Northwood Tissue, North- wood Recycling and North- wood Logistics - Northwood Hygiene will be able to de- liver an integrated, reliable and UK based supply of dis- posable paper products to the away fromhomemarket.
