Non-flexible working
Yahoo bans working from home Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has left hundreds of staff facing the tough choice of relocating from home to Yahoo’s nearest office, or find a new job by June. The memo announcing the
change, sent from human resources chief Jackie Res to all staff, said: “To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices.” The company has been recognised
in the past for its flexible working offering, including being ranked in the ‘Top 50 best places to work’ by Business Insider earlier this year.
Female graduates still earning less
Gender pay gap still prevalent Despite 40 years of equal opportunities legislation, female graduates are still trailing behind men in the salary stakes, a new earnings survey has revealed. The study, carried out by Warwick
Institute for Employment Research, demonstrated a difference of several thousand pounds between male and female graduates – even those who went to the same institution and obtained the same qualification. Law graduates are the worst affected,
with women expected to start on a salary of £20,000 and men £28,000. Jane Artress from the Higher Education
Careers Service Unit, who commissioned the research, said the results are a mystery. “It could be perhaps that women are not bargaining as effectively as men. It could be that women expect lower salaries,” she speculated.
