in a competition to produce a police patrol vehicle able to support new and innovative ways of working for the police service. The 2013 challenge built on the concept
About the Competition I
n October 2012 the ACPO ITS Group in- vited vehicle manufacturers and informa- tion technology suppliers to take part
the criteria set by ACPO ITS. The project was managed by the Vauxhall Special Vehicles team, based out of Millbrook, and the car was constructed in a special vehicles manu- facturing facility. The consortium is a unique collaboration
of last year’s competition to build the police car of the future, but invited entries to dem- onstrate the concept of a SVA (Single Vehicle Architecture) equipped car becoming the communications portal and technology platform for mobile devices. ACPO ITS invited suppliers to use a range
of devices and applications ..”that will sup- port and assist offi cers in the future and de- velop new concepts and ways of working to capture evidence and information, quickly and easily from the scene of a crime or in- cident and share this via a back offi ce with other staff .” A consortium was formed by General Mo-
tors (Vauxhall) of leading edge suppliers to develop and build a vehicle meeting all of
between Vauxhall (the vehicle supplier), spe- cialist hardware suppliers and expert solu- tions providers to create probably the most sophisticated police vehicle ever presented in the UK. The aim of the project was to pro- vide a vehicle solution to respond to all of the criteria set out by the ACPO ITS CAST Competition, but to also ensure that each solution was of a suffi cient quality and ma- turity so that a police force would be able to buy it and implement it. The consortium is built up of 12 com-
panies, all considered best in class in their speciality. Each consortium member have provided equipment or solutions to both British and international police forces and have optimised their off ering in real police implementations.
A word from the judges
by the GM Consortium, particularly con- sidering the size of the consortium and complexity of the requirement. The judg- ing team felt that the vehicle shown... was a polished off ering that could be transferred... with no remedial work re- quired. They felt both entrants came at the solution from diff erent perspec- tives and that the vehicle demonstrated showed huge amounts of potential for the future. As this was a competition, the judging
T
panel were asked to provide a defi nitive winner. To that end, It was felt that, whilst the competition... was incredibly close there could only be one winner and that winner was the Vauxhall Consortium, who had addressed all of the criteria and more. The judges were extremely impressed with the whole vehicle fi t and the fi nal quality of the integration of so many disparate systems, all working seamlessly.
