imply you change your decisions, it does mean you treat everyone in a calm, dignifi ed manner. This is essential. Educators have to be re- sponsive to families and the public, and try to help. Ultimately, a professional is a

role model. As the athletic director, it’s your responsibility to set a good, positive example for your coaches and student-athletes. It is impossible to expect others to follow expec- tations and standards if you don’t model this same behavior. The most powerful aspect of professional lead- ership is setting an example. Professionalism also involves extending beyond personal inter- ests and gains to help others, such as colleagues, student-athletes and coaches. The moment you believe you have all of the answers, you have started your downhill slide. Learning is a continuous journey and not a one- time destination. A good professional athletic admin-

istrator, therefore, attends conferenc- es, takes courses (I suggest National Interscholastic Athletic Administra- tor Association Leadership Training Institute courses), reads journals and is open to new developments and ad- vancements with technology. While these efforts take time, your profes- sionalism depends upon expanding horizons and continual learning. In spite of the possible ambigu- ity of the term professionalism, its application depends on your experi- ence and the expectations of your setting.
