APL Awards 2013 Wednesday 13 March

Roof Gardens, Kensington

paralysed from the waist down. He is still numb from below the knee but this hasn’t stopped him being as active as ever. APL Chairman

The judges have met and the shortlist has been announced, so now it’s time to book your place at the key event in the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) calendar! The APL Awards, which are being generously sponsored by Bradstone, offer a great chance to meet fellow landscapers and designers, see all the entries displayed and hear first-hand what made the judges decide on the winners. The awards will be followed by an inspirational talk

from Major Phil Ashby. Phil always had a taste for adventure but he never thought he would come up against such a dramatic race to freedom when he volunteered for a six-month tour with the United Nations as a peace keeper in war-torn Sierra Leone. He found himself in the middle of an ambush during a violent civil war having to make the decision to risk being killed trying to escape rather than be taken alive. Phil’s autobiography, Unscathed, rocketed into the bestsellers’ list and film rights are currently being held by Miramax. Phil will share his amazing and unique story of how he led his team to freedom and then faced his own battle, once he got back home, with a virus that left him

Mark Gregory will host the day, opening with a run through of the key APL activities that have taken place over the past year. Mark will also discuss the ins and outs of the judging process before introducing Adam Frost and Richard Barnard who will announce the award winners.

UK Plant Biosecurity Seminar Thursday 30 May Fera headquarters, York

The issue of biosecurity has never been higher on the Government agenda and with changes on the cards for plant-health regulation in the UK and the rest of the EU the HTA is organising a seminar on 30 May to present and debate the issues. The seminar, organised in association with Confor, is entitled, ‘UK Plant Biosecurity – preparing for the threats of tomorrow’, and will be held at Fera’s headquarters near York. Following an opening address from Defra Minister Lord de Mauley the conference will hear from top plant health officials on the current threats facing the UK plant trade and an industry panel will debate the lessons learned from the 2012 chalara outbreak. Breakout sessions will focus separately on the needs and concerns of the forestry and amenity/retail sectors of

the trade and consider the options for building resilience in the sector, replant grants, improving traceability, codes of practice and reducing the risks to industry. The seminar, supported by HDC and Fera, aims to

bring together nurseries, retailers, specifiers and landscapers with regulators and NGOs to identify an action plan for regulators and the industry to minimise the threat to the UK environment while developing a strong and thriving UK production industry. It also provides a unique opportunity for the trade to present concerns and solutions to policy decision-makers and to shape future regulation of the sector.
