North Thames Tilting Weirs Customer: Contractors:

Aquatic Control Engineering was awarded the opportunity to supply a range of water level management solutions to JT Mackley for the Environment Agency’s Tilting Weir Project.


The North East Thames Area of the Agency has a number of flood storage reservoirs, many of which have control penstocks to limit flow, permit drawdown or provide level control.


For this project three tilting weirs were designed and manufactured by Aquatic Control for the Stoney Wood, Bentley Priory and Kidds Weir sites, where fine control of water level was important. Each weir was approximately one metre wide and just over a metre deep, but each was made in a bespoke size to fit the existing structures. In addition to the tilting weirs, JT Mackley procured two sets of stop logs for the Kidds Weir site.


The contract also included manual penstocks provided by Aquatic Control Engineering for Ridlins Wood and Wychdell Flood Storage Reservoirs to replace heavy cast iron ones installed nearly 50 years ago.


For the final site, Markyate Flood Storage Reservoir, a drawdown penstock was needed at the upstream end of the outlet culvert, but this would be under water when the reservoir filled, so it was designed for remote operation. This was achieved by installing a hydraulic ram on the penstock and operating it via a hydraulic hand pump sited some 15m away on top of the dam crest - the nearest accessible point for operatives when the reservoir is full.


During installation of all this equipment Aquatic Controls technical director provided on-site assistance to the JT Mackley team.
