Sandwich and Stonar Loop, protecting 488 homes and 94 businesses. It will receive £9.75 million funding 2013/14 (total scheme costs is £23 million). • Salmons Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme

This scheme will reduce the risk of flooding from Salmons Brook to 2,587 households in north London. It will receive £7.76 million funding during 2013/14 (total scheme cost is £26.2 million).

In the South East partnership funding contributions will amount to £20 million.

The new Partnership Funding system targets areas of severe flood and coastal erosion risk, and homes in deprived communities. The partnership funding approach targets Government support towards the most at-risk and deprived communities and gives local people greater choice about levels of local flood protection.

In the past, communities held out for full Government funding when there was little or no prospect of it being available. The partnership funding model clarifies

what level of investment communities can expect from the taxpayer so that they can find cost savings or secure funding from other sources to enable schemes to go ahead.

Further examples of flood defences awarded funding today are:

• Eastoke Point, Hayling Island coastal defences work at Hayling Island in Havant which will reduce flood risk to 242 properties and protect 448 properties from coastal erosion through the construction of a revetment (or barricade), beach management and maintenance of existing structures. This scheme will receive £4.8 million in 2013/14 (total cost is £5.7 million).

• Broomhill Sands sea defence scheme which will protect 1,256 homes through the installation of groynes and shingle recharge. This scheme will receive £436,000 in 2013/14 (total cost of the scheme is £28.8 million and will be completed in 2015/16).

As well as the flood schemes that will progress as result of this year’s funding,

the allocation for 2013/14 includes maintenance of existing defences. The Environment Agency has also committed to increasing the number of people receiving free flood warnings to over 1.1 million and 2016. Anchorsholme and Rossall in Lancashire are set to receive nearly £22million from the acceleration fund towards major new sea defences that will reduce the risk of flooding to over 13,000 homes and businesses, major highway and tramway infrastructure, a major sewerage pumping station and public utilities.

A total scheme cost of around £100million makes it one of the largest flood defence schemes in the UK. Croston in Lancashire will receive £1.5 million from the fund to construct defences that will reduce the risk of flooding to over 459 local homes and businesses. Crossens near Southport and Marton Mere in Lancashire have secured funding to refurbish existing pumping stations, that help maintain flood protection to homes and businesses in those communities.
