Graded bank prior to bioengineering works


A toe revetment was then created using rock rolls, which also acted as a coffer dam, preventing sediment release from the bank works.

The banks was then graded and covered with a turf reinforcement mat (NAG C350), before vegetation cover was added.


The River Darwen is a gravel bed river running through Darwen and Blackburn in Lancashire.


A 120 metre stretch of river bank had been subject to ongoing bank instability issues and a gas pipeline set in the bank was dangerously close to being exposed. In fact it was with just one metre of the eroded bank.

Environmental, who then brought in Salix to provide detailed design options utilising bioengineering techniques.


The first stage was to grade the eroded river bank section prior to carrying out any bionengineering works.


Rock rolls being placed prior to the stone back fill


Stone was then used as backfill up to the average summer water level and the bank profile was built up using local soil.. To strengthen the bank, Salix used Tensar Geogrid, which provides greater stability and safety.
