reduce sediment entering the beck. Surveys were carried out to identify where sediment was entering the watercourse, barriers to fish movement and areas that would benefit from habitat improvement.

The key to improving the ecological state of the stream is in careful management and restoration. Whilst shaded areas and overhanging branches might prevent certain plant growth, some of these areas need preserving for the benefit to other wildlife such as shading areas for brown trout or Kingfisher perches.


The contractors, Creative Nature, have been involved with the project since 2006 and have an excellent understanding of the chalk river system, wildlife and conservation.


Other considerations at this site have been for Nathusius pipistrelle using the river corridor and so the teams have worked closely with local bat ecologists to avoid trees with medium-high risk potential.


Ruth Snelson, Project Officer for the Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to improve a long stretch of chalk stream habitat. By working in partnership with the Environ-ment Agency, and with support from farmers and the golf course, we expect some positive long term changes to the habitat. Brown trout have been known to live in this part of the beck and it would be great to see them return in the near future.”


The work near to Laceby village started at the end of January and is part of the final phase of this part of the Laceby Beck Project. Once completed, the beck will continue to be monitored.
