Online videos encourage visible improvement in class
Teachers Media, the online CPD service, has launched a four part series entitled ‘Visible Improvement’ to help teachers to demonstrate clear progress in pupil learning, a key focus of the 2012 Ofsted inspection framework.
The films feature handpicked case studies from Outstanding schools and show teaching practice that is “promoting pupils’ learning and progress”, as cited in the Ofsted framework. They cover critical topic areas including maths and writing at primary years, and focus on literacy across the curriculum and data and differentiation at secondary level.
Roy Blatchford, Director of the National Education Trust and a lead Ofsted inspector, presents the films and said they are a response to teacher demand: “I’ve visited over 700 classrooms in the past year and I’m regularly asked for advice about demonstrating pupil progress. It’s vital that teachers have the skills to demonstrate to anyone observing them the progress pupils are making in their class. I’m confident these films will provide a valuable resource.” The company has also produced training packs on key education topics with the help of education experts. They combine tailored video clips and discussion questions and have been created for both primary and secondary, covering a wide range of themes including behaviour, maths, science, literacy and special education needs.

Hospitality industry offering solutions to youth unemployment
Hilton Worldwide is attempting to ‘prevent a lost generation’ with the announcement at the World Economic Forum of a commissioned white paper from the International Youth Foundation (IYF), which highlights solutions to youth joblessness that the global hospitality sector is uniquely positioned to provide. The company is also announcing the launch of Bright Blue Futures, a global commitment to youth development around the world, led by its flagship Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand.
The white paper, Creating Opportunities for Youth in Hospitality, outlines a three-point call-to-action for hospitality companies worldwide: to design an enterprise-wide strategy for youth development that is locally relevant and long term; to enable industry-wide progress by sharing best practices that close the information gap on youth; to measure results and track progress toward youth development goals that are relevant to the hospitality industry and society as a whole.
According to IYF, there are few industries whose resources, expertise and career pathways are as relevant to addressing the challenges facing young people today, and whose business and expansion relies as heavily on a trained workforce in every region of the world.
The travel and tourism sector, which alone employs 255 million people globally, is expected to generate 73 million new jobs by 2022.
Bright Blue Futures, a global program from Hilton Worldwide, designed to help young people achieve stability and hope through education, life skills development, workforce training and employment, is being supported by Hilton Hotels & Resorts team members across 550 communities in 80 countries.
Rob Palleschi, Global Head, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, said of the programme: “Our company has the unique resources, expertise and career pathways to assist the needs of young people. We are proud of what our team members across the globe do every day to support young people through Bright Blue Futures.”
