Digitisation in action from ABBYY
A
BBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies and services, offers two versions of its text recognition software, FineReader and Recognition Server. The software provides intuitive tools for digitising documents and converting scans, photographs and PDF files into editable and searchable electronic formats. It is a time-saving alternative to manual retyping and helps to unlock content from paper and images.
Teachers and administrative staff use FineReader to easily convert documents for use in making exam/study materials, or for creating searchable archives of important documents. SENCOs and ICTs use FineReader to convert books and other study materials to text that can be used with assistive technologies, such as text-to-speech software, improving the lives of students with learning and physical impairments.
When used with the HoverCam, ABBYY FineReader Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software provides a powerful tool in the coping strategies of those with special needs. It allows students and support workers to easily convert printed documents to speech and useable text whether at home, in the classroom or on the move.

AzteQ makes Virtual Desktop a Reality for Warrender School
O
ne of the UK’s leading Education ICT companies, AzteQ, has delivered a complete Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution for Warrender School in Hillingdon.
The system provides secure access control and document and printer sharing, over a secure, high speed network. Because the VDI is web based everyone has identical access via a common user interface, from a Linux netbook, Apple Mac or Windows PC.
Paul Lake, Headteacher at Warrender, said; “We wanted a common software environment, regardless of platform, location or time of day; AzteQ helped us to realise this very cost effectively.”
Rob Clement, Head of the Education Department at AzteQ, said “We have delivered partial VDI solutions to several schools, but Warrender is the first full scale deployment; the school has shown tremendous vision and will see real benefits from the technology.”
AzteQ has been a leading technology supplier to the Education market for ten years; the company has demonstrated thought leadership in key areas of the education technology debate.
