Sika Sarnafil refurb service is top of the class

S

ika Sarnafil has contributed to a series of school re-roofing projects on behalf of Northamptonshire County Council.

The multi-million-pound investment in remedial works included bringing the roofs in line with building regulations for a better thermal performance. Generally working on buildings first constructed from the late 60s to late 70s and all suffering water ingress, Sika Sarnafil roofing contractors installed a total of almost 30,000 sqm of mainly G410-18EL membrane. Importantly, Sika Sarnafil’s specialist refurbishment service provides a market-leading single-point guarantee covering not only the membrane specified, but also the design and workmanship.

Sika Sarnafil’s Neil Smith says this dedicated refurbishment service is ideal for multi-site projects: “Because our system is cold applied, it’s a popular choice for schools as it allows staff and pupils to remain on site throughout works. As well as the peace of mind our guarantee brings, there are weekly site inspections before a final inspection sees the guarantee issued.”

ISG completes £38.8 million Wood Lane Studios project

I

SG has completed the £38.8 million Wood Lane Studios scheme. Developed by Voreda and Imperial College London, the building provides high quality and highly sustainable accommodation for students and key workers in the capital. Wood Lane Studios was constructed on the site of the BBC’s former worldwide HQ site near White City. The BREEAM

Excellent rated development comprises studio accommodation for 606 post- graduate students in four ten-storey blocks, which are linked at ground floor level, alongside three timber-framed, three-storey residential buildings providing key worker accommodation.

Engaged on the project at an early stage in the design process, ISG worked collaboratively with Voreda and Imperial College London to add value to the scheme from both a commercial and environmental perspective. ISG also worked closely with the supply chain to drive value engineering, quality and the aesthetic imperative of the scheme. An example of this approach saw collaboration with the bathroom supplier on the research and development of a combined bathroom and kitchen pod, maximising installation efficiencies and representing one of the first applications of combined pod usage in a student accommodation scheme in the UK.

Innovative solution for natural ventilation in schools T

he need to maintain precise control over carbon dioxide (CO2 ), temperature and

energy consumption is essential to create quality learning environments within educational institutions and SE Controls’ new, compact NVLogiQ room controller provides an innovative solution to meet these demands.

NVLogiQ constantly monitors indoor air quality, temperature and humidity and uses innovative algorithms, developed in conjunction with Loughborough University’s Building Energy Research Group, to control the automatic operation of windows, vents and heating to improve learning and comfort while saving energy. A manual over-ride option is also incorporated to provide additional versatility and direct control. Capable of being used as a stand-alone classroom controller or networked throughout educational institutions, NVLogiQ also incorporates integrated data logging to allow detailed analysis against pre-defined design and performance criteria on both new build and school refurbishment projects.

This ability also presents a range of opportunities for consultants, contractors and facilities mangers to not only verify a school’s natural ventilation (NV) design and performance, but also to enable accurate ongoing system evaluation to be easily undertaken.

, temperature and relative humidity readings are continuously displayed on NVLogiQ’s integral LCD screen while a red, amber and green ‘traffic light’ display gives a constant indication of indoor air quality. A manual over-ride capability is also built in to the room controller, allowing staff to temporarily open or close ventilation devices. NVLogiQ’s versatile and powerful control structure enables use in a range NV strategies, including cross ventilation and single sided ventilation, as well as managing passive ventilation and night purging.

NVLogiQ is compact and unobtrusive. With a footprint of just 160mm x 105mm, it can be located close to desks and work areas, allowing the precise monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2 CO2

), temperature and humidity.
