just-in-time deliveries, aids legal certainty and ensures product quality.

The sensor

specialist and RFID provider Balluff can look back on 25 years of experience in this

area and offers an extensive portfolio of track-and- trace solutions. The portfolio was recently expanded to include new RFID technologies for high- temperature applications, which are often called for in the semiconductor industry or in paint-spray lines and drying ovens in the automotive sector. Balluff offers not only the entire spectrum of flexibly combinable LF, HF and UHF-RFID components, but also a variety of stationary barcode readers by means of which its customers can realize individual and economical traceability solutions on a high technical level. Data carriers mounted on a workpiece, pallet or directly on equipment record all steps and manufacturing lots of a production sequence. This occurs in running operation, so that the data can be evaluated in real time or later – even after years – for traceability purposes.

Spirol's coiled spring pins improve production of laparoscopic surgical devices

A

medical device manufacturer was using a Swiss style CNC-machined Knurled Solid Pin in a surgical device, used as a “grasper” to allow a surgeon to operate through a laparoscopic port. The pin is used to drive the jaw movement at the distal end of the device. However, during pin installation, there was a high insertion force, bending of the pins, damage to the sub-assembly and generation of metallic debris. Since this device was designed to go inside the human body, the possibility of introducing metal debris was completely unacceptable. Spirol provided the solution with its stainless steel, light duty coiled spring pin. One issue identified immediately was that pins, made from 303 stainless steel with no subsequent heat treatment, were being installed into a hardened 416 stainless steel shaft. This was conducive to debris generation from the softer 303 stainless steel knurls. Spirol Industries performed a number of installation tests which confirmed the incompatibility of hardnesses of pin and the host material, as well as the variation in the outer diameter dimensions of the pin. These were the root causes of the debris generation, as well as the other problems.

Flexible integration with CAN

WAGO's new 750-658 I/O module enables CAN field devices to be linked to its I/O-SYSTEM 750

he new CAN I/O module supports CAN Layer 2, making it extremely flexible at the field level. This module can be configured to integrate with CANopen, supporting SAE-J1939 or DeviceNet, with protocol-specific functions being implemented using an application program on the many

WAGO Series 750 controllers. The 750-658 CAN I/O module adjusts to baud rates between 20 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s using automatic bit rate detection. A fixed transmission rate can also be set. Using six configurable filters for input telegrams, CAN messages can be filtered by means of identifier formats 2.0A (11-bit identifier) and 2.0B (29-bit identifier). The CAN I/O module can be used in three operating modes: sniffer mode, transparent mode or mapped mode. This maximises the implementation of CAN into major fieldbus protocols with WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 for building factory or process automation.

ariohm EuroSensor has released a new low-cost range of linear position sensors, combining a sealed membrane potentiometer in a robust support housing that makes installation straightforward for medium precision measurement from 50 mm to 1 metre. The new IPL series linear sensors are available in nine standard position or displacement measurement ranges with independent linearity to +/- 3% and average repeatability to +/- 0.5 mm. For higher precision use, a membrane potentiometer with independent linearity to 1% is available on request.

Variohm’s new low cost linear position sensor V

Aimed at demanding linear measurement applications across all industries, they are particularly well- matched to door and gate closures, valves and vents, lifting and handling machinery, and other areas where low-cost position verification is essential. The simple design of the IPL can be manually driven with minimal force required, or provide position feedback in combination with electric, pneumatic or hydraulic automated actuators. The field proven IP65 rated membrane potentiometer and the durable anodised aluminium frame and plastic wiper mechanism is capable of operation in harsh environments. The temperature range for the assembly is -40 to +85ºC with humidity at 95% RH. The flexibility built into the range includes standard Crimpflex solder-tab electrical terminations and further connector options on request. Thanks to Variohm’s own in-house design and manufacturing capability, the IPL linear position sensor can be supplied in custom measurement lengths and the mechanical interface can be application adapted for OEM customers. Variohm EuroSensor designs, manufactures and sources a comprehensive range of sensor technologies for linear and rotary position, load, force, vibration and temperature - providing complete pre-sale and post-sale application support for demanding measurement applications throughout industry, agriculture, construction, autosports and research.

precision. They are available for fast, long production runs as well as for specialised machining operations. With manufacturers continuously looking to improve the performance of their equipment, machine tool components must be able to perform in the toughest shop floor environments.

M The reliability of their

electrical systems is vital and major OEMs now rely upon Adaptaflex electrical conduit systems to provide the protection needed and helping to prevent unnecessary downtime for maintenance. Adaptaflex conduits and connectors for machine tools connect and protect critical electrical cables and components. They must have high mechanical strength, flexibility and abrasion resistance.

They must be suitable for

fast moving and static applications. Ingress protection and protection against oils, coolants and chemicals can also be essential in many environments. Developments in CNC machine tools have also resulted in a need for conduit systems that can interface with multipin-connectors. Faced with these different demands Adaptaflex high performance conduit systems, connectors and accessories have been carefully engineered to meet the precise requirements of machine tool OEMs.
