Feature Tracking & Traceability

Metal detectors help dairy firms chill out over traceability

Lock Inspection Systems explain how its INSIGHT range of metal detectors offers significant benefits to dairy processors and packers - in particular manufacturers of ice cream

U regulation 178/2002 states the general principles and require- ments for food law, within which article 18 requires that traceability shall be established at all stages of pro- duction, processing and distribution. It has become essential for manu- facturers to incorporate into their processes the total traceability of ingredients, products and batches. It also places a legal responsibility on ethical food business operators to have systems and procedures in place which can identify an affected product and enable effective isola- tion, quarantine, or if necessary, com- plete product recalls. Lock Inspection’s INSIGHT range of metal detectors, which deliver sen- sitivities to magnetic and non-mag- netic metals, are designed to satisfy growing demand for consumer safety and brand protection. The range ensures that metal contaminants are identified and rejected, and the inte- gral OPTIX detector management software provides real time data cap- ture, ensuring full traceability of product, batch and performance information. The OPTIX software provides an easy to use interface and DDS (Direct Digital Signal) vector

diagrams which helps manufacturers achieve quick automated product set- ups and a high level of traceability.

Detection

The greatest benefit of this software to dairy processors and packers, in partic- ular manufacturers of ice cream, is the ability it gives production staff to ‘see’ if a metal has been detected with aid of live graphical feedback. “Ice cream can be difficult to inspect, due to a conduc- tive signal from the product and temperature changes

he Technoserv Group is using machine vision cameras from Basler as the preferred option for the company’s face recognition technol- ogy that is currently being used in complex automated systems to ensure safety in public places. One of their current major devel- opments is the introduction of auto- mated identification. Such systems allow comparison of individuals among a number of people passing through the surveillance zone with biometric data in existing databas- es. In addition, they accumulate

information necessary for crime detection. Technoserv use a combi- nation of Basler industrial and net- work cameras to deliver the video data for analysis and identification of individuals. The video data is fur- ther processed through face recog- nition system software in the cus- tomer’s data centre. So far, the solution has been

introduced in a number of sports and transportation facilities throughout Russia, providing auto- mated support for the operational and investigative activities of secu-

rity forces and facilities. Andrey Khrulev of Technoserv commented, “Basler industrial cameras provide high quality uncompressed video, which is necessary for the operation of any sys- tem conducting video analytics. The combination of price and qual- ity that Basler cam- eras offer is an ideal fit for our projects.” Basler www.multipix.com T: 01730 233332 Enter 217

as it goes through production. Lock’s current generation metal detector uses sophisticated technology to overcome this and delivers class leading sensitiv- ity to both magnetic and non-magnetic metallic contamination,” commented Lock Inspection’s marketing and sales manager, Simon Taylor. To overcome the problem, graphical feedback from the DDS vector display enables operators to visually interpret the event and fine tune the detector to eliminate false triggering without sacri- ficing metal sensitivity. This easy to use trouble shooting measure helps dairy manufacturers to minimise rejected product without sacrificing product security, plus they can extract and report inspection data in a variety of ways including a USB portal, via Ethernet or directly feed data into the on-site SCADA system for monitoring purposes. These features help manufacturers working in the dairy processing and packaging industry to stay compliant and increase their competitive edge when demonstrating to retailers their competency over traceability. Retailers are keen to ensure that they have the necessary systems and con- trols in place to minimise the inci- dence of foreign body contamination and ensure they are able to retain consumer confidence in the event of a food safety inci- dent. The alternative is clear - inaction could, in the event of a contamination event, lead to termination of contracts and loss of brand integrity, not to men- tion punitive legal action.
