Krishna Das Retreat: Sole Florida Visit
rishna Das was born Jeffrey Kagel in 1947 on Long Island, New York. His parents were Jewish but as a teenager he began reading books on Eastern religion. In the early 1970’s he met spiritual teacher Ram Dass, author of the book, Be Here Now who told him about the Indian guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Kagel traveled to India to meet Neem Karoli Baba and spent nearly three years at his ashram. Neem Karoli gave Kagel the name “Krishna Das,” which means “one who serves Krishna” and introduced him to “kirtan,” an ancient Hindu devotional practice of call and response chanting of the names of God. Krishna Das, who now travels the world almost full-time, will be here to offer the experience of kirtan to eager audiences who have heard his CDs played in yoga classes for more than 17 years. He was just nominated for a Grammy for Best New Age Album of the Year, “Live Ananda.” Krishna Das now also has a SIRIUS/XM Radio channel and can be heard on a dedicated kirtan track on Pandora Radio, as this devotional yogic practice of “chanting The Name” comes of age in America. On Friday, March 1 – Sunday, March 3, 2013, Krishna Das will be offering “The Heart of Devotion” Retreat at the Hindu Temple of Central Florida (1994 Lake Dr., Casselberry, 32707). For the 2.5 day retreat, the tuition of $175 includes: 2 Kirtans with Krishna Das and Friends; 2 Workshops with Krishna Das; 2-All-level Hatha Yoga classes led each day by Genevieve Walker, his talented violinist; 2 Chantings of the hymn “Hanuman Chalisa” led by Nina Rao, his assistant and cymbals player.
