Constar cuts CSD capacity

PET packaging producer Constar International has closed its operation at Jackson in Mississippi and is downsizing activities at Havre deGrace in Maryland following the loss of a major carbonated soft drinks (CSD) contract in the US. The company said the

moves will result in the loss of around 80 staff. With the US CSD fi lling

market moving rapidly to in-house manufacturing of its packaging, Constar said it plans to turn its focus from CSD to higher value packaging projects. “We need to direct more

of our effort and resources to targeted growth opportu- nities in packaging markets for hotfi ll beverage, food, barrier, short-run and specialty products,” said Constar CEO Andre Laus.  www.constar.net

ECHA considers more cadmium restrictions

The European Commission has asked the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to examine the case for expand- ing REACH restrictions on cadmium to cover all plastics materials. Comments from interested parties must to be submitted by 11 February 2013 using an online questionnaire which can be accessed at http://bit.ly/ECHACd. Annex XVII of the chemicals

legislation currently lists 16 specifi c plastics materials where cadmium use is restricted as a colorant in PVC, PUR, LDPE, PET, PS, PP and

XLPE (there is an exemption for LDPE master- batch). Further restrictions apply to the use of cadmium as a stabiliser in PVC. For any

colorant and stabilisation applications which escape existing limitations, there is still a limit of 0.1% cadmium metal by weight. However, restrictions do not apply to articles “coloured for safety reasons”.

Several

cadmium com- pounds are still used as pigments in plastics. Industry associa- tions say that suitable alterna- tives may not be available for

certain applications, such as

colouring engineering plastics. Further background informa- tion on cadmium usage, including the full Annex XVII document can be read at: http://bit.ly/CdPDF.  www.echa.europa.eu
