interest in barrier IML systems using PP/EVOH multi-layer films. However, Ilsemann is also promoting an insert moulding technology developed with Swiss injection machinery maker Netstal and mouldmaker Glaroform that uses an overmoulding process to fully encapsulate an aluminium metal foil preform. He says the company is hopeful of securing some projects for this technique, which he believes offers performance benefits in the most demanding food packaging applications. Germany’s Waldorf Technik, an


established supplier of high output IML technology with its Highflex systems, has also been focusing attention on smaller and less investment-intensive solutions with the recent introduction of the Easyline IML and Swingline IML systems. The Swingline robot and side assembly system is particularly notable for requiring just 600mm of free space beside the injection moulding machine and offering a mould in-out time of less than 0.5s. The compact high speed robot, which as its name implies swings around a pivot, is designed for use on single-face moulds and is intended to provide a cost effective option for lower volume applications on moulding machines up to 150 tonnes. The growth in the number of packaging producers


using standardised IML is also evidenced by the recent partnership agreement between French robot builder

Sepro Robotique and IML automation firm Machines Pagès. Under the terms of the deal, Sepro will offer IML systems for machines up to 350 tonnes running cycle times of more than 3.5s built around its SE350 side entry robot and a series of standard label distribution, transfer and


loading modules from Machines Pagès. Sepro will provide full application


development and after-sales service for the joint systems in Europe, North America and Brazil. Sepro managing director Jean-Michel Renaudeau says projects for moulding machines above 350 tonnes or running at cycle times less than 3.5s require more specialised robotics and


know-how and will continue to be handled by Machine Pagès directly. The two companies demonstrated a


system in operation at the Fakuma fair in Germany last year running on a 250 tonne Sumitomo (SHI) Demag El-Exis moulding machine producing 1.2 litre pails with


wrap-around IML labels on a two cavity mould running on a 4.5s cycle. The SE350 robot


provides a maximum linear speed of 5m/s and a mould in-out time down to 0.9s. Swedish packaging producer and IML specialist


ArtaPlast has developed a number of high performance IML solutions for customers, including a novel package for Finnish dairy products group Valio that is claimed to block more than 99% of UV radiation. The packages use a proprietary multi-layer IML film technology that Arta Plast acquired through its 2010 purchase of KWH Plast’s injection moulded packaging operations. Valio is using the technology on its Viola line of lactose-free dairy products. ArtaPlast also uses IML technology in its 1-Seal one-piece lidding solution, designed to replace the use
