Hallelujah! Gospel choir breaks record
By Erica Basnicki
The London Community Gospel Choir made it into the Guinness Book of Records this May as the largest gospel choir ever assembled on a stage. The group’s performance was mixed by veteran sound engineers Raphael Williams and Nikoma Bell, using 96- and 64-channel Soundcraft Vi6 consoles. The concert at London’s Royal Festival
Hall was also multitracked for a live album and DVD by Simon Changer, who had a third, remote 96-channel Vi6 isolated in the back control room. Inviting 30 other gospel choirs from across Europe to participate, the
UNITED STATES Coachella debutante ball for Anya By Erica Basnicki
EASTERN ACOUSTICWorks’ (EAW) newest PA system, Anya, had ‘her’ official coming out at the Coachella Festival’s Gobi tent in April (see
www.psneurope.com for more about EAW’s unusual approach to marketing Anya). The system’s escort for the day was none other than influential sound reinforcement company Rat Sound, which deployed seven Anya modules per side with a single out fill module flanking a main column of six. Rat Sound principals Dave
Rat and Jon Monson, who worked with EAW to develop the MicroWedge line of stage monitors, contributed throughout the R&D process for Anya. “When Dave and Jon came to the factory to work with the final engineering prototypes, they asked if they could use the first 16-module build live at Coachella,” Rocha said. “Naturally, we were thrilled to showcase
our new product at one of our industry’s most important and demanding events.” Anya uses a comprehensive technology

platform that EAW calls Adaptive Performance, which allows an array to rapidly generate virtually any three- dimensional wavefront surface and simultaneously optimise the system frequency response to perfectly match the optimal requirements of any venue. “The Anya system sounded great and did an excellent job of covering the space,” Rat said. “It is really exciting to have a hands-on
experience with a new technology system thrown right into a challenging, real-world application. It became readily apparent that Anya is positioned to become a world-class system. Anya fulfilled its sonic and performance expectations, solidifying Rat Sound’s commitment to take delivery of the first 40 production units in June.”n

existing record of 1,138 was broken with an ensemble of 1,169 vocalists performing simultaneously. Sound equipment was provided by
Richard Nowell Sound Systems, who also supplied Shure UHF-R wireless microphone systems (comprising UR4D receivers and Beta 58 handhelds) and PSM1000 in-ear monitoring. Shure Distribution UK’s John Ellis,
who sang in the massive choir, commented: “The atmosphere in the hall when the Guinness team announced the record had been broken was unbelievable – we really raised the roof!”n
