PMC gets physical By Erica Basnicki
THE UK’S National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has developed a laser-based acoustic measurement technique with the help of PMC loudspeakers. Existing acoustic
measurement techniques use microphones to map the
soundfield around the device being measured, its directivity and dispersion pattern. NPL’s new laser-based measurement technique, known as Rapid Acousto-Optic Scanning (RAOS), removes the need for a physical measuring device such as a mic, and instead relies on the fact that soundwaves affect
delay of a laser beam passing the device under test as it generates audio, a complete picture of the dispersion pattern of the device can be built with ease. Although the principles behind RAOS have been understood for many years, turning the theory into practice so that it could be used in a test and measurement context was another matter. PMC says its acoustically neutral speakers were ideal test products to help NPL develop its technique. Ian Butterworth, higher research scientist at NPL, said: “Working with PMC design engineers helped us to home in on some pertinent acoustic characteristics of various PMC speakers, and the process has allowed us to develop our technique into a valuable industrial tool.”n

WORLD Abbey people By Erica Basnicki
A PANEL of music industry leaders, including Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry), Tricky Stewart (Beyonce, Rihanna) and John Feldmann (Goldfinger, Good Charlotte) have selected the winners of the Avid and Abbey Road Studios Song Contest, hosted by online collaboration platform Talenthouse. Italian quartet Scratch on a Blackboard, London-based singer-songwriter Millia Oz, and South African rock duo Emerger are the Judge’s choice winners in the competition. Of the nearly 5,000 songs submitted by independent musicians and producers across the globe, Armenia’s Brothers Nalbandyan was selected as the Fan’s choice award winner. Each Judge’s choice artist will have their original song mixed
and mastered by Abbey Road’s online mixing and mastering service and will receive a complete Pro Tools HD Native recording system from Avid. The Fan’s choice award winner will receive an Mbox audio interface with Pro Tools 10 software. “One of Avid’s primary missions is to enhance the creative process of the music industry by delivering the most advanced and innovative technology,” said W Sean Ford, vice president, worldwide marketing at Avid. “Our partnership with Abbey Road Studios has enabled us to pair some of the industry’s top producers with some of the best aspiring artists. Congratulations to all of the winners.”n
