welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT
“The internet does not let you hide anymore. You set up a company, you can be found quite easily”

WITH ALL the talk around Digital Village going into administration (p16) I want to tell you a cautionary tale of my own. Last April I had an email out of the blue from a company called Acoustic Technology Group, proclaiming a move to a factory in Hull which would see the company becoming “a major force within the industry”. I was intrigued, and began an email correspondence with the founder director of ATG, who seemed reluctant to leave much in the way of contact details or, indeed, his/her name – an unusual approach to say the least. I watched ATG ‘grow’, with more press releases about new products and installations in the UK and US, starting a New York office and expanding the factory. I even met the director, and we talked of how ATG had “secured venture capital investment that could total £3 million over three years”. But there were never any printable pictures of the installations. “We must have the most photo shy enclosures ever,” I was told. Then the day before PL+S, I received an email from someone called ‘Frank’ (using the same ATG email address) telling me that said director had gone into hospital, and wouldn’t be attending Frankfurt. The Dig Vig issue prompted me to check
www.duedil.com where I found that ATG went into administration on 18 April! But this is not before the director had set up ATG Design Ltd on 26 February. His business partners in the US did not know the company was insolvent. The venture capital company confirmed that ATG only had access to a fraction of £3 million. This is just part of how the ATG story has unraveled. The person in question has let down a lot of people, including his partners and at least one furious client I have heard from. But the internet does not let you hide anymore. You set up a company, you can be found quite easily. And that, above all, is my cautionary tale.
