obituaries

SWALLENDER SIMPSON Genevieve Nelson Swallender Simp-

son, 97, passed away on Oct. 9, 2012. She was in the original cast of the Ice Follies in 1936 and was the wife of Bill Swallender, one of the six coaches who tragically died in the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team crash in Brussels, Belgium, on Feb.15, 1961. She was born Genevieve Beatrice Nel-

son to Erick and Emma Nelson on Sept. 19, 1915, and was one of three children. “Gen” began skating in Minneapolis and St. Paul, where she first met Bill Swallender, the 1933 U.S. junior men’s champion. Eddie and Roy Shipstad and Oscar Johnson recruited Gen to join their brand new ice skating show venture, Ice Follies. She was part of a skating quartet with three other girls, known as The Nelson Sisters. The act was broken up when Gen married Bill in 1937, and she joined him in Kansas City where he was coaching. As they moved across the country

for Bill’s coaching assignments, Gen often taught alongside her husband, most nota- bly at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and in Baltimore. She then retired when their two sons were born, William in 1943 and Erik in 1953. Gen also took on the role of mother to some of Bill’s students, espe- cially those who lived with them temporari-

ly, including World bronze medalist Virginia Baxter, who lived with them in Philadel- phia, and U.S. novice champion Diana Lapp in Detroit, as well as to many summer stu- dents in Lake Placid, N.Y. When the Swallenders moved to De-

troit in 1950, Bill taught at the Detroit Skat- ing Club, at Michigan State in East Lansing during the summers and at the Swallender Ice Studio, which he opened in 1955. Gen then came out of retirement and became the business manager for the studio. Bill joined the 1961 U.S. World Team

a week before the flight when U.S. Figure Skating offered his student, World Team al- ternate Doug Ramsay, a spot on the team. Bill was 52 at the time of his death. Gen sold the ice studio six months after the crash and returned to Minneapolis. She later mar- ried Dr. Charles Simpson, an orthodontist, who had one son. Dr. Simpson passed away in 1995. Gen was the business manager in her

husband’s orthodontic office, was active in the PTA, as well as in dance, garden, antique and investment clubs. She is survived by sons William (Mary) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Erik (Sue) of Minnetonka, Minn., stepson David Simpson of Minneapolis, Minn., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. — Patty Bushman
