2012 HILTON HHONORS SKATE AMERICA NUGGETS KISS THE COOK

Anastasia Cannuscio is pas- sionate about more than just skat- ing.

“I come from a huge Italian KEEPING THEIR HEADS ABOVE WATER

Lynn Kriengkrairut and Logan Gi- ulietti-Schmitt have already achieved so much in their lives on and off the ice. At Skate America, the 2012 U.S. pewter medal- ists established personal-best scores in every segment of the event. T ey have their college degrees. His

degree is in geology from Eastern Michigan University in 2008; her degree is in pre-med- icine from the University of Michigan in 2012.

Giulietti-Schmitt is the director of the

Ann Arbor Ice Cube Basic Skills learn-to- skate program, while Kriengkrairut has re- ceived the Summa Cum Laude National Lat- in Exam Award (2006), AP Scholar Award (2006) and 11 consecutive superior ratings in piano from the National Federation of Music. With credentials like these, it’s easy to assume the duo could take on the world without fear, right? Wrong. “Lynn is really afraid of cats,” Giuliet-

ti-Schmitt said. “It’s a little weird and kind of funny. As for me, I’m really scared of drowning. I was never a good swimmer when I was younger. Even though my par- ents put me in lessons, I was pretty bad at it. I maybe could swim to save my life now, but that’s really about it.” — Mimi Whetstone

INSPIRED BY DR. WHO Fans of the long-running British science fi ction television series “Dr. Who” —

dubbed “Whovians” — are weighing in big-time on Armin Mahbanoozadeh’s free skate, choreographed by Catarina Lindgren to the series’ theme music. T e skater has a running dialog with them on Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook, and they’re not shy about giving advice. “It’s been a huge response, much more than I expected,”

Mahbanoozadeh said. “I didn’t know what I was getting into, be- cause I was really new to the franchise when I picked the music. I’m learning more and watching more and really enjoying it. By the end of the season I really want to portray that character on the ice.” One of the things they’re most concerned about is Mah-

banoozadeh’s costume. Dr. Who’s hero, a time-traveling alien, sports a brown suit and bow tie — not the most attractive look on the ice, so the skater came up with

family, so good food has always been a big part of my life,” Can- nuscio said. “I’ve always been around it, so I just took to it.” Taking the advice of her ice

dancing partner, Colin McMa- nus, and her sister, 2011 Skate America competitor Isabella Cannuscio, Anastasia decided to share her talents with the world. Her new cooking blog, which includes step-by-step instructions as well as photographs of dishes such as Salted Caramel Ice Cream Sammies and Pumpkin Whoopie Pies, is called Iced Everything.] “My mom and I used to bake together, so that’s usually what I do,” Cannuscio said. “I

fi gured I’m baking all these things anyway, I might as well take pictures and share.” Cannuscio’s creations can be seen at icedeverything.blogspot.com.

another plan. “My outfi t gets its inspiration from his vehicle, a police

box that time travels and is called TARDIS,” Mahbanooza- deh said. “We’re trying to use cues from the series to help the

program. When we get back, Catarina [Lindgren] and I are going to try to watch it together and see what more we can do.” — Lynn Rutherford
