encompass even incidents which may be popularly considered ‘minor’, there are numerous accounts of victims feeling unable to report such behaviour because of the belief that they would not be taken seriously. Others have reported failing to do so because they believed that no action would be taken. Victim blaming is another aspect that frequently has a negative impact on victims of sexual assault, due to the damaging and misguided preconception that a woman who is dressed in a particular manner or who has consumed alcohol is “asking for it” or is to blame for failing to protect herself. It is therefore imperative that airline staff who might be in a position to deal with such situations are fully aware of existing legislation and properly prepared to respond appropriately to incidents and to support victims. And this may stretch beyond cabin crew alone – one reported incident of rape in April 2011 took place in a Denver airport terminal after the victim missed her scheduled flight. According to the woman’s testimony, two airport janitors passed by during the course of the attack but did not come to her aid or take action to intervene. Two other airline employees who saw the attack from the tarmac raised the alarm. In the words of FBI Agent Simon, “a woman should be able to fall asleep on an airplane without being groped”. From increasing cabin crew monitoring to providing specialised training in vigilance and appropriate response, it is the duty of any airline to do its utmost to protect passengers from what seems to be an ever- increasing problem.

Many fantasies associated with air travel and the sense of being in non-space can result in some people acting inappropriately. When it is consensual, it may be simply disruptive. When it is not consensual, it is criminal assault.
