Family-owned Harley-Davidson expands with new showroom and museum

Mathews Harley-Davidson has been located in downtown Fresno, Calif., since 1961. The third generation of the Mathews family has become heavily involved in the business and decided to make a commitment to stay downtown and grow the business. The store recently underwent a $2 million expansion that gave the facility an 11,615-square-foot showroom and museum. A destination for both riders and Harley enthusiasts, the facility’s top fl oor is a museum that features 15 motorcycles, the oldest one dating back to 1917. According to Mike Pickett, president of Fresno-

based Don Pickett & Associates Inc., the design- builder, the mission was to create a new stand-alone showroom/museum to replace the existing on-site location. The existing building was a combination of metal panels, brick, stucco and tile. The stucco and tile were fi rst removed to reveal the old brick, which was then rehabbed. “To tie the new building with the old, we went with a metal panel/brick combina-

tion on the new building,” explains Pickett. The new brick was matched up with the old and the old metal panels were replaced to match the new. The structure is a pre-engineered metal

building from Houston-based Metallic Building Co. The exterior features 26-gauge architectural profi le panels in Ash Gray, and the roof is made up of 24-gauge PBR profi le metal panels with a Solar White cool roof coating. The interior framing consists of light-gauge metal studs. Don Pickett & Associates designed the roof and

electrical systems for a future solar project. Santa Monica, Calif.-based Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope supplied the low-E, dual pane storefront windows. The store celebrated the grand opening to

its new showroom in August 2012. Don Pickett & Associates is currently working on a rehab of the existing building exterior to tie-in with the new and a remodel of the old showroom to be the store’s new service department. “To keep their service depart-

ment operational, the inside is being completed in two phases,” Pickett explains. The project should be completed by the end of the year.
