Leaf Blower

The 70mm electric ducted fan unit (above left) comes with the motor mounted, with an 8-bladed fan—and it blows a lot of air. Dick, holding the EDF

have a special deal on these cores, a box of four sets at a good price. Any ¼ inch thick or 5mm sheet foam can be used for the con- struction, some 1⁄32-inch plywood for the fuselage doublers, a piece of 1⁄8-inch plywood for the wing joiner and the firewall, and some ¼-inch balsa for the two booms. I cut the foam parts out with a very sharp scalpel-type modeling knife. I build mostly with 5-minute epoxy; I’m always in a hurry,

and the epoxy works on most of the sheet foams, but the types with thin plastic cover- ing on both sides need a bunch of holes poked through the plastic covering where the epoxy will be going. Foam compatible CyA can be used, and would save some weight.

The wing spars are 1⁄8×3⁄8-inch basswood, from a hobby shop or arts and crafts store, and are epoxied into the foam wing panels.

The wing tips are sanded to a reasonably well rounded shape, and lightweight vinyl spackling putty works well to fill in gouges and rough spots. The two wing panels butt up against the fuselage sides, with a 1⁄8-inch plywood joiner going through a slot in the fuselage, between the upper and lower spars.

This is easier and stronger than cutting a hole through the fuselage for the foam wing.
