Building Without Plans


After drawing a datum, locations for formers were selected (above left) and drawn in (above right) at right angles. Pick places where angles change and where extra strength might be needed (below left), such as at the nacelle


mount. The outline and locations can now be transferred to a balsa sheet (below right) for cutting. Careful placement of templates reduces the risk of material waste.


The fuselage sides have square stock for the corners attached (above left). This increases the glue area and strength. Former patterns were sketched on paper by comparing the 3-views, then lightly glued to sheet stock. Once cut out,

they can be lightened. The similar root ribs (above right) are made by stacking blanks which are sanded to shape. Be sure to go ahead and make a few spares while you’re at it!
