Mixing beauty and music
IB catches up with Joe Doherty, Regional Manager Ireland of Capital Hair & Beauty, to find out a little more about life in, and out of, the beauty industry.
I ended up in the beauty industry because…I ended up here by accident really. Trying to decide if university was for me when I left school I took a Summer job with a hair and beauty company and loved the industry and have stayed with it ever since. That was 20 years ago now! I started when I was very very young!
If I wasn’t in the beauty industry I would be…I think something to do with music as it’s a passion of mine. Something technical like sound production or engineering. It certainly wouldn’t be singing; I couldn’t inflict that on the world!
The best thing about my job is… The people and the fact that no two days are the same! There are always challenges that need to be overcome and it’s great seeing ideas and plans come to fruition. Especially my involvement in opening the Capital store in Dublin at Nangor Road. It has been great to greet customers who I’ve known for years and meet new customers who love what we’re about at Capital.
An average day for me…Starts with the gym at 6am; I find it’s the best way to launch into the day ahead. As soon as I get into the store at around 8:15am it’s looking at how the store presentation is and what messages we need to communicate to customers. Then when the team gets in it’s about making sure they are all comfortable with our plans for the day. Without the team the store is nothing and I’d like to take this chance to

thank them for everything they do. I also try and visit customers at their salons each week. After that anything can happen!
My ideal weekend would be… Spending time with my family and friends. Something as simple as going to Dublin Zoo can be great. Then Sunday has to be golfing in the morning. Total relaxation.
My favourite book is…That’s a tough one; there are lots of differing reasons for escapism. It is probably Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons. I couldn’t leave it down when it came out.
My favourite film is…The first Matrix film. Great idea and story.
The most famous person I have met is…I’m not big on meeting famous people but probably Chris
Evans, who was a top guy. So down to earth and he paid for a night out just because we were on a table beside him on a night out in Dublin.
My favourite part of the world is… Definitely Singapore. So many different sides to it.
I could not live without…Apart from family of course, it would have to be music. Everything else comes after that. My iPod goes everywhere with me.
My favourite beauty treatment is… I hope my friends don’t read this but the Thalgo men’s skin care range is great!
I would like to be remembered as…Someone who had fun and helped a few people along the way. Hopefully I won’t be getting remembered just yet!
