POLISHED TOPERFECTION

Characterised by traditional nail polish bottling, these of Hybrid / Gel Polishes offer the same depth of pigment as a regular nail lacquer.

Formulations differ between brands but essentially some are Gel with ingredients added to lower the viscosity – known as Hybrid Polishes, and some are 100% Gel in a more liquid formula than traditional Soak-Off Gels. This means they can be applied with the cap brush provided, like a regular nail polish.

Nail Techs often ask in frustration why the bottles are a solid colour, rather than clear glass, to enable them to see how much product is left. Alas, this is because exposure to light can harden the product (i.e. why it cures under a UV or LED light), and so the opaque bottles ensure the product at the bottom of the bottle is as efficient as when you first open it.

Application tips

Permanent Polishes are particularly useful to manicurists and pedicurists who specialise in natural nail treatments. However, many can also be used over Liquid and Powder or Gel enhancements too. What’s more, don’t only think of fingertips – Permanent Polish on toenails is a perfect option to increase revenue from pedicures.

In essence, the majority of the Permanent Polishes on the market follow basic steps not dissimilar to a traditional lacquer application – basecoat, colour coat, topcoat. Each layer is cured under a UV or LED lamp before the next is applied.

Apply in thin coats, curing before applying the next coat. “A wrinkled surface is a sign of uncured Gel,” explains Maria Gore, of Gainfort Hair & Beauty Supplies. For best results, always remember to cap

the free edge during application, to prevent lifting or peeling. “Pull the Gel out over the edge of the nail but leave a small margin between Gel and cuticle. If gel comes into contact with the skin, remove with a wooden cuticle or cocktail stick before curing,” Maria adds.

Once applied, the coverage is thinner than a traditional Soak- Off Gel so that nails look like they have a couple of coats of lacquer but the product has the duration of a Gel application, with many brands claiming theirs will last anything from 14 days to three weeks, coining the term ‘Permanent Polish’. With care, I have experienced colour remaining chip- free for up to four weeks on fingers and a remarkable eight weeks on toes!

You may think that a product which makes the results of a salon treatment last longer will be detrimental to your profits, as clients may reduce their number of appointments with you. From speaking to salon owners I have discovered that this is not true.

Clients love the fact that they don’t have to wait for their polish to dry before leaving the salon, and that they can be confident that even after two weeks their nail colour will still look at good. They still want to enjoy their regular manicure – they just know that they don’t have to worry about chips between appointments. What’s more, the recommended price for a Permanent Polish treatment is twice that of a basic file and polish, and you can charge nominally for removal.
