Clodagh McKenna is one of Ireland’s most well-loved chefs, with a chain of restaurants, award-winning cookery books and four television series.

Oonagh Clarke caught up with Clodagh as her fourth cookbook Clodagh’s Kitchen Diaries is published, to discuss cooking up beauty treats.

Oonagh: Working in the public eye, do you feel pressure to look good all the time?

Clodagh: No – in general, I take good care of myself but it’s not something that’s on my mind all of the time. When I’m working front-of-house in the restaurant, I do try to look my best… but when I’m in the kitchen, less is more in regards to make-up.

Oonagh: Do you have a beauty regime?

Clodagh: Yes – I have my personal regime. I exfoliate my skin regularly. My number one beauty rule is that I never go to bed without removing my make-up and applying a good night moisturiser.

Oonagh: Do you have any particular beauty problems or concerns?

Clodagh: My one problem is my nails – working in the kitchen, it’s difficult to have ‘nice looking’ nails as they have to be short and they take on a lot of abuse.

Oonagh: Do you have treatments in the salon and if so what is your favourite?

Clodagh: I love The Grooming Rooms on South William Street in Dublin – they do an amazing deep moisturising facial.

Oonagh: Do you ever cook up any homemade treatments for yourself in the kitchen?

Clodagh: I use to do an oatmeal and honey mask, but I’ve not done that in a while. What I still do, is dip my nails in olive oil and let them soak for about 10

minutes – it really moisturises the cuticles.

Oonagh: What would be your desert island product be?

Clodagh: My Bobbi Brown Concealer and my Elizabeth Hardy Amazing Face Cleanser.

Oonagh: Would you ever consider cosmetic surgery or Botox®

? Clodagh: No – not for me.

Oonagh: Any beauty mistakes you will admit to?

Clodagh: I went to a beauty salon that I did not know to get an eyebrow wax – it was a disaster and I have learned my lesson! If you get a bad wax – it takes months to fix.

Oonagh: Do you think Irish women are beautiful in general?

Clodagh: Yes – I do! I believe beauty comes from within and Irish women have incredible personalities that always shine through.

Oonagh: Having such a successful career, what is the secret to your success?

Clodagh: I have an incredible passion for what I do, I absolutely love it – it’s my passion so work never feels like a chore.

Oonagh: Is there anyone who you admire or who inspires you?

Clodagh: There are so many women that I admire – tough to pinpoint one as I seek inspiration from so many women. Donna Hay for her amazing culinary talent, Alice Waters for her commitment to food education, and Nora Casey for her gracious approach in business.
