Calgary Stampede Celebrating 100 years of genuine Western hospitality

Calgary centennial This year, the Calgary Stampede celebrated its 100th birthday, and in a few years there will be even more reasons to celebrate. In 2014, the new Agrium Western Event Centre will debut, adding 150,000 square feet of space for agricultural events at Stampede Park.

Poised between the picturesque Canadian Rocky Mountains and the rolling Alberta prairies, Calgary offers a wide panorama of attractions and experiences, all with a dis- tinctive touch of Western hospitality. Visitors from around the world come to Calgary to enjoy world-class dining, shopping, parks, museums, theater performances, as well as nearby Banff National Park — located just a day trip away. Visitors also descend on Calgary for the world-famous Calgary Stampede, known as

“The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” for its 10 packed days of rodeos, concerts, parades, equestrian events, and celebration of all things Western. But during the rest of the year, the park’s more than 500,000 square feet of space makes it the largest conven- tion and meeting venue in downtown Calgary.

90 PCMA CONVENE NOVEMBER 2012

This unique complex of flexible indoor and outdoor space includes state-of-the-art meet- ing rooms, fully equipped exhibition halls, an intimate 500-seat theater, the 17,000-seat Grandstand, the Stampede Corral Arena, and Rotary House — a rustic log cabin. The largest facility, BMO Centre (formerly

known as the Roundup Centre), is one of the busiest of its kind in North America, hosting about 700,000 attendees annually. With five exhibit halls totaling 250,000 square feet, the venue exudes both an authentic West- ern ambiance and a cosmopolitan feel that are representative of Calgary today. Put it all together, and BMO Centre is flexible enough to accommodate the largest of trade shows or an intimate boardroom meeting. For addi- tional space, the Stampede Corral Arena has a 17,000-square-foot arena floor suitable

for everything from rodeos to concerts, all directly connected to BMO Centre. In 2014, the Calgary Stampede Park

will grow even larger with the addition of the Agrium Western Event Centre. The 150,000-square-foot project will be the larg- est in the park’s history and will triple the amount of space available for agricultural events. The center’s striking art installations, competition arena, exhibit hall, multipurpose space, and 31,250-square-foot arena floor will be flexible enough to host everything from equestrian events to training seminars.
