This month we mourn the passing of an industry icon and Metal Architecture columnist. Ted S. Miller, CEO, of The Miller-Clapperton Partnership in Austell, Ga., passed away on October 9 after a 10-year battle with cancer. I had the opportunity to meet Ted several times over the past few years and communicated regularly with him as he worked on his column. He was a wonderful man, full of warmth and joy, and will be greatly missed. His monthly column, Ted’s MCM Corner, found on page 10, will be continued on by
his sons Zane and Zeke, along with his loyal employees at Miller-Clapperton. A Miller-Clapperton project, the Duke Energy Center in Charlotte, N.C., starts off this
month’s Market Feature section. Turn to page 34 to read more about this project, which features Reynobond aluminum composite material from Alcoa Architectural Products, and fabricated by Miller-Clapperton. Also this month, we take a look at an architect who relies heavily on his love of sketch-
ing to turn projects into a success. Mazair Behrooz, AIA, even gives out blank sketch books to interns when they start at his fi rm. Read more about what inspires Behrooz, starting on page 32. The Metal Construction Association gave out its 2012 Chairman’s Awards at last month’s
METALCON. Turn to page 20 to check out the winning projects, which honor innovation and creativity while showcasing the use of metal in exceptional building designs. Additionally, the California ISO Headquarters, which received an honorable mention in the Chairman’s Awards, is featured on page 24. Learn how metal products help this LEED Platinum building serve multiple purposes as public space, an offi ce building and mission critical energy management center.
