The American Institute of Architects Northwest and Pacifi c Region (AIA NW&P Region) has awarded 16 projects for design excellence at a ceremony held October 12 during the annual AIA NW&P Regional Conference held in Tucson, Ariz. Honor Awards were given to The Pierre, a residence in the San Juan Islands, Wash., designed


by Olson Kundig Architects of Seattle, and to the University of Oregon John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes, Eugene, Ore., designed by ZGF Architects of Portland, Ore.

Metl-Span names Jeff Irwin to head new division


Metl-Span LLC, Lewisville, Texas, welcomes Jeff Irwin to be executive vice president and general manager of its newly formed Architectural Panel Division. He will be responsible for expanding and improving Metl-Span’s capabilities to competitive- ly address the growing demand for architectural insulated metal panels. Irwin will join the team commissioning a new architectural production


facility in the eastern United States. Irwin is a 33-year veteran in the metal wall


and roofi ng industry and has 22 years involve- ment in the insulated metal panel industry. He will advance Metl-Span’s architectural panel operations bringing new architectural panel prod- ucts to the market and expanding the business footprint of the Architectural Panel Division.

AIA and NOMA update


memorandum of understanding The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) renewed their 2009 Memorandum of Understand- ing (MOU) during the fi rst annual “Strength Through Diverse-Cities Multicultural Summit” in Dallas in September. Jeff Potter, FAIA, 2012 AIA president, and Sanford


Garner, AIA, LEED AP, 2012 NOMA president, signed the MOU, which refl ects a commitment by AIA and NOMA to continue and enhance their combined effort toward a more diverse and inclusive architecture pro- fession and built environment. The MOU is also a call to action fostering in-


creased collaboration at the state and local level. Indi- vidual members and chapter leaders are encouraged to reach out to their respective AIA or NOMA chapter to jointly sponsor events, share meeting space, or simply begin a dialogue.


GAF hosts grand opening of Statesboro,


Ga., ISO plant GAF, Wayne, N.J., host- ed the grand opening of its new, state-of-the-art ISO plant in Statesboro, Ga., on October 10. Dis- tributors, contractors, local diplomats and press were all invited to the red carpet affair that took place at the plant, which drew nearly 300 guests. The day included tours of the plant, demonstra-


tions given by the Center for the Advancement of Roofi ng Excellence (CARE), an awards luncheon with speeches from GAF President and CEO Bob Tafaro and GAF COO Dick Novak, and an EXPO tent display- ing other GAF products and systems. There are currently three additional ISO plants in


GAF’s future plans.
