Chiral molecules appear identical but are actually mirror images, like a right hand and a left hand. When used in pharmaceuticals, the two isomers can have very different effects. One infa- mous example from the late 1950s is Thalidomide, where a “left-handed” molecule helped prevent morning sickness, but a “right-handed” mol- ecule was later found to cause birth defects.
